LIFE on the ROAD

A 4th generation circus performer tells us about her life "on the road" with the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, Gold Unit.

I have always been a “circus girl”. I have traveled with my mom over the summer and on weekends, doing small dates and helping out, but never really had the center stage. Until now! I am with ‘The Greatest Show on Earth”, Ringling Bros. Gold Unit and it has changed my life in a drastic way, but I am enjoying the ride!

Performing with "The Greatest Show on Earth!"

Since I stepped foot into the arena in Tampa where we rehearsed, I knew it was meant to be. The experience is one that I will always remember.  Waking up early to come in and practice.  Learning new dance moves for the production numbers, and then waiting your turn to practice your act.  Then having to change it all the next day!  But it was tons of fun!  During this time I was meeting my new friends of which I would be spending the next 2 years with and trying to understand them, since most spoke very limited English. Once rehearsals were over it only got better!  I waited for opening night, to get out on that stage in front of a real audience(rehearsal was 3 weeks of the producers and such as our audience, hence no real applause!), and show the people our new show!  I can only describe the feeling as awakening!  Getting out there and strutting your stuff.  The whole day I couldn’t stop smiling!  I was, and still am, so happy to be apart of this show, to entertain the people, and to do what I love!  Perform!  People always ask me if I like what I do. I answer”  No, I love what I do!  I mean how many people can say their job is riding an elephant?!”  Well I guess most circus girls can, but for what I call the towners, it is a dream come true to them, as it is for me!  But it comes with a price.  I have 4 horses and 2 dogs, so it comes with a lot of clean up.  Quite frankly, all the horses do is eat, sleep, work, and poop!  And to top that off, we move every week.  You set up stalls and such for the horses, work and then take it down at the end of the week, move to the next town and do it all over again.

Even "Cinnamon" the family dog has a job, as she leads

On Ringling.

But its not just work and perform. We have days off and we like to go and explore the town, or just relax with the other performers and staff. The people I have met on this show are unbelievable! They are great people and I have created some friends for life! The performers on the show are relatively young. So they like to party and have a good time! They are always up for fun! It’s the people that make this job so fun! I can truly say this is the best experience of my life! I am 16 years old, and with the “Greatest Show on Earth”!
